Hack LAB

Located at the library's Lakeshore Branch, the Hack LAB gives you access to 3D printing, vinyl cutting, lasering and more.  Curious about why the library is getting into hacking?

The Meta Space Glasses Developer Kit is the first commercial release of a new kind of computer interface called Augmented Reality. Unlike the Oculus's virtual reality, Augmented Reality devices do not block out the world around you. Spencer, a local Innisfil resident came to the ideaLAB to share abit about his Space Glasses and what they can do.

"The Meta Space Glasses use depth-sensing cameras to capture your gestures and detect the world around you and actually overlay interactive...

The Thermal Printing Calculator

Here at the ideaLAB, helping a patron to complete an interesting project on the laser or vinyl cutter is usually a lot of fun. At the end of the interaction though, there was one little boring part of the process: calculating how much to charge for the materials used. So, in order to make this part a bit more interesting, and to make the calculations easier for everyone, we have developed the Thermal Printing Price Calculator.

Two laser cut scarves

Fashionistas know that laser cut fabrics are all over runways this year, and now they’re here in Innisfil! In a previous post, I mentioned how great the laser cutter slices through polyester felt. Any old thing that you are trying to design needs to exist in 3 dimensions, so the first step is putting your brain firmly in 3D mode. Usually, this involves drawing out your design from more than one side, so that you can develop a sense of your object in 3D space. In the case of the Minecraft pig-head...

Decorative wooden trees

Lasers are good for more than blowing up death stars; you can use them to make holiday decorations! I like to make things, but tediously cutting shapes out with scissors is really not for me, and don’t even get me started on sewing! I’m more of a digital crafter. This is why I love the laser cutter at the ideaLAB. My designs are all made using the free open source software InkScape. It’s a graphic design program and free for anyone to download on any...
